UVEITIS - What is Uveitis?
Our eyes have 3 coats. From outside to inwards these are sclera, uvea and retina. Inflammation of this UVEA is called Uveitis.

Causes of Uveitis-

Most of the causes of the disease remain unknown even after detailed work up. But in few cases these may be associated with the followings :
  • Systemic disorders like Auto Immune Diseases.
  • Systemic infections like tuberculosis, toxoplasmosis, HIV.
  • Local causes like ocular surgeries, trauma etc.
Types of uveitis-
1. Anterior : This is the most common type. It affects the front portion of uvea i.e. iris and ciliary body. Common symptoms are eye pain, redness, intolerance of light (photophobia) and blurred vision.

2. Intermediate : It affects pars plana part of uvea. Patients commonly see black spots floating in front of the eyes and there may be blurring of vision.

3. Posterior: It affects back portion of uvea. This causes blurring of vision, absent central or peripheral vision.
4. Pan: This affects entire uvea. Acute Uveitis: This is new onset uveitis when patients come with redness and intense ocular pain. Chronic uveitis: This is old uveitis where acute symptoms are less.

Nature of uveitis- These are very much notorious for its recurrent nature. Unfortunately there is no universally accepted way to prevent recurrence. Frequency and intensity of recurrence is unpredictable.
Treatment of Uveitis-
Mainstay of treatment is steroids. It can be used locally or systemically according to the disease site can severity. In some cases we cannot prescribe steroids due to other health factor. In those situations immunosuppressive drugs can be used. But this should be kept in mind that steroids and immunosuppressive have lots of side effects. So any patient using these must consult his/her doctors regularly.
Why Uveitis is dangerous ?
1. This may affect your vision.
2. This may cause cataract.
3. This may destroy your retina.
4. Uveitis and its treatment may elevate intra ocular pressure.
5. Systemic steroid can cause diabetes, hypertension and lot more.
66. Systemic immunosuppressive can damage kidney, liver, blood.
