Berhampore Chokher Haspatal - Susrut Eye Foundation & Research Centre

In 1996 with help of Sightsavers International Susrut first initiate its community eye hospital in Berhampore, Murshidabad district of West Bengal.
In rural sector of West Bengal there is inadequate facility for healthcare, so since inception Berhampore Susrut became a trusted eye service provider.
In the first year itself more than 50,000 patients are treated in the facility.

Land reforms Department & Health Department of Govt. of West Bengal
provided .66 acres of land free of cost to expand the facility.

At present Susrut Eye Foundation provides services like

1. General eye outpatient.
2. Cataract Clinic - both SICS & Phaco Emulisification.
3. Glaucoma Clinic
4. Optical dispensing unit with optical shop.
5. Community Ophthalmology.

Able to reduce the prevalence of blindness by 17% comparing with the total prevalence in Murshidabad 70,399 no.(as per census) among the people living in 11 blocks of Murshidabad district by Dec 2008, this is in comparison with our target of 20% in 2008.

Year 2008

We have treated total 1, 22,427 number of patients at our base hospital.
143 camps were organized in the year 2008 Free eye screening camp including (old + new) consist of 25095 male and 29258 female patient, total 54353 no. Subsidised OPD at base hospital is 2119(male -1297,female - 822) Paying OPD at base hospital is 59745(male – 34380,female – 25365)
7848 IOL surgeries performed at base hospital. Of which 5495 free, 276 subsidised and paying is 2090.
Other surgery performed during 2008 is 4622 of which 782 is paying and 3840 free.
19180 no. Refractive error diagnosed in camp & 19248 Refractive error diagnosed in the Base hospital.
In the Base hospital, 9124 spectacles dispensed out of which 6026 is paying and 3098 free i.e 33% of spectacles dispensed free in the base hospital.
In the camp, 5141 out of which 3376 no. of paying and 1765 no. of free spectacles are dispensed in the year 2008 i.e 34% free.
